Pancras (Pancratius) was born in about the year 290 in the town of Synnada in
Phrygia, an area of Asia. He was the only son of a wealthy Roman couple but
was orphaned at a young age and brought up by his Uncle. Both Pancras and his
Uncle became Christians. The Roman Emperor Diocletian beheaded Pancras in 304
during the persecution of Christians. Pancras was only 14 years old.
St Augustine dedicated his first church to St. Pancras, now Canterbury
Cathedral
